The International Olympic Committee has determined the host of the Winter Games 2026 at its meeting in Lausanne. The games take place in Italy.
Milan will host the XXV in 2026. Olympic Winter Games. The majority of the 82 members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted at the assembly in Lausanne on Monday for the Italian fashion city and against competitors Stockholm.
Twenty years after the games in Turin, the sports spectacle on ice and snow will not only return to Italy, but again into a classic winter sports region in Europe. Most recently, Vancouver (2010), Sochi (2014) and Pyeongchang in South Korea (2018) hosted. It will be Beijing in 2022.
Majority of the population for the Olympics
The pre-election Milan had started with Cortina d’Ampezzo, where in 1956 the Winter Games were held. The representatives of the candidacy had shown themselves very self-confident. “It’s a fantastic job, Milan represents the best in Europe,” said Giovanni Malago, president of the National Olympic Committee of Italy (CONI). “It’s not possible to get a better deal than Milan and Cortina.”
Decisive for the IOC surcharge was also the great approval of the Italians for the Winter Games: 83 percent voted for the candidacy. By contrast, in an IOC survey only 55 percent of Swedes had agreed to apply for Stockholm from Are.
